Nebraska father and son earn top golf honors

The Nebraska Golf Association has announced the father and son duo of John and Andy Sajevic as its Senior Golfer of the Year and Andy Golfer of the Year, respectively.

Andy won the award for the second time (he also won in 2010 and ’13), matching his father’s accomplishments as a two-time winner (1989 and ’96). They became the first father-son duo to receive the state’s top golfer award and now own two such awards each.

Andy, a senior on the University of North Carolina golf team, won the Nebraska Match Play Championship and the Nebraska Amateur Championship in 2013. He became the first player to win both since 1998 when Nebraska golfing great Steve Friesen accomplished that feat.

“It was great to have my family out there,” Sajevic said after his match-play victory. “I loved sharing that with them, especially my dad. His name’s on that trophy and now we both have a match-play title and a stroke title. That’s pretty cool – we are so blessed to share that together.”

Andy’s stroke-play victory was his third in the past four years. He also won that title in 2010 and ’11.

After Andy completes his college eligibility, he will consider turning pro.

“I’d love to play professional golf,” he said. “That has always been my dream.”

Previously, Andy was recognized as the NGA’s Junior Amateur Golfer of the Year in both 2007 and ’09.

John, Andy’s father, also has an impressive resume, but played a limited national senior amateur schedule in 2013. His 2013 accomplishments include a tie for fifth at the prestigious North & South Senior Amateur played in August at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst Village, N.C. He also was runner-up in the Nebraska Senior Amateur and tied for 15th at the Nebraska Amateur.

John is a three-time state amateur champion and has played in the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur championships. He was also a three-time NAIA national champion at Kearney State before graduating in 1978.

Playing competitively is only half the story for John. Giving back to the game he loves is the other half. He now serves amateur golf as a board member on the Nebraska Golf Association.
